The membrane protection increases the lifetime of the sensor by protecting it from high energy particles and molten metal. Furthermore, the membrane protection also slightly improves thermal shock performance. If thermal shock is a major concern, Type 6563A is better suited.
The slanted holes of Type 6564A1 further improve thermal shock behaviour and membrane protection capabilities.
