Vehicle NVH testing solutions – ready for the future of mobility

For effective vehicle NVH testing: Kistler offers accelerometers, customized force measurement as well as data acquisition and data analysis solutions.

Automotive engineering is evolving at a speed never seen before, continously renewing the challenges in the world of noise, vibration and harshness - NVH. NVH covers all aspects related to the acoustic and vibrational performance of the vehicle and is becoming increasingly relevant, as changes in propulsion systems and vehicle architecture pose new engineering challenges. A good NVH performance of a powertrain or a vehicle does not only translate into durable, reliable and more efficient products. It also determines the driving quality perceived by the vehicle passengers. This in turn takes the name of comfort, driving pleasure and brand image, and it is the duty of NVH engineers to tailor how the mobility of the future will sound like.

Accurate, reliable and efficient NVH testing – next to you and ready for the challenges of future mobility

Measurement technologies are one of the enablers of the continous innovative transformation, through physical insights and technical understanding. Kistler stands by your side to  meet these challenges with a wide range of measurement solutions for vehicle and powertrain NVH testing, ensuring maximum accuracy, reliability and flexibility. Motor and e-powertrain NVH testing

Accelerometers for automotive NVH analysis from Kistler cover nearly all cases, including electrical engines.

Vibration of electric motors and powertrains is characterized by high frequency content and the presence of current ground loops that can affect the accuracy of its measurement. In this context, triaxial sensors such as the 8763B and 8764B offer an exceptionally broad frequency range and various ground isolation possibilities – all in a wide varity of g ranges, accomodating several NVH testing scenarios. Additionally, accelerometer 8763B ensures flexible mounting and accurate calibration over all three axis, thanks to the three threaded holes - one on each direction. If you need 360° freedom for cable orientation and maximal connection stiffness via screw mounting, accelerometer 8764B fits your requirements, as it features a through hole together with integral ground isolation to minimize current ground loops.
When a single axis measurement is preferred, sensors 8704B and 8774B offer the right performance with a variety of options to optimize your NVH testing on electric motors and electric powertrains.

Engine and powertrain NVH testing

Engine and powertrain NVH testing

Accurate vibration measurement on internal combustion engines and powertrains cannot compromise on excellent thermal performance, ease of mounting and resistance to harsh environments. This is why powertrain NVH engineers worldwide choose the triaxial IEPE accelerometers 8766A and 8765A, which measure vibrations with accuracy nearly unaffected by temperature changes thanks to our proprietary PiezoStar crystal technology. Additionally, the accelerometer 8766A ensures flexible mounting and accurate calibration over all three axes, thanks to the three threaded holes – one on each direction. If you need 360° freedom for cable orientation and maximal connection stiffness via screw mounting, accelerometer 8765A fits your requirements, as it features a through hole together with an integral ground isolation to minimize current ground loops.
When it comes to single axis measurements of engine and powertrain vibration, 8714B and 8715A deliver high termal performance. At the same time, they keep small dimensions, low weight and minimize ground loops thanks to the integral isolating pads.

Vehicle dynamics, durability and tire NVH testing

RoaDyn wheel force transducers from Kistler support vehicle development in the area of vehicle durability measurement.

Vehicle dynamics and durability testing often require measuring low frequencies down to 0 Hz and this is why customers worldwide measure with our highly accurate MEMS capacitive accelerometers 8316A and 8396A. These accelerometers can be configured to adapt any data acquisition chain and test environment, as they offer a wide choice of electrical output possibilities, including temperature and differential output, as well as various types of integral cables besides the standard connector.
When vehicle dynamics, durability and tire NVH require broader operating frequency range, the triaxial accelerometer 8763B provides high accuracy and mounting flexibility, thanks to the three threaded holes, one on each direction.
All these products well complement the Kistler vehicle dynamics and durability testing product line.

Structural vibration testing and modal analysis

Structural vibration testing and modal analysis

For structural vibration measurement and modal analysis applications, triaxial sensors 8763B and 8762A also offer a broad choice of g ranges and accurate vibration measurement, thanks to the low noise levels. Both ensures flexible mounting and accurate calibration over all three axes, thanks to the three threaded holes – one on each direction.
Our product line for structural vibration and modal analysis is also complemented by an IEPE impluse hammer, impedance heads for shaker testing, cables and force sensors.

Customized force measurement for vehicle NVH testing

Powertrain NVH sensors for testing are customized by Kistler, as unique force measurements require unique solutions.

Dynamic force measurement is very common in automotive NVH testing and often used for noise and vibration control, maximum load measurement, mounting point design, blocked force measurement for TPA and much more. Nevertheless, all these applications impose specific geometrical constraints and unique operating load conditions, which often cannot be fulfilled by standard sensors. They are unique applications – so they demand unique solutions.

Backed by more than 60 years of experience in piezoelectric sensor technology, we can provide complete solutions that can precisely measure up to six components (three forces and three torques) to match customized geometrical and load requirements. Based on piezoelectric measurement technology, customized solutions from Kistler are ideally suited to meet current and future challenges presented by NVH engineering, reaching high frequencies and offering a very broad measuring range. As our customer, you can turn to one single source for everything you need: from design and engineering through to production, calibration commissioning and service.
